Are you a Seattle-area high school student interested in participating in GV’s Leadership Program and Guatemala experience but simply do not have the time?
If the answer is yes, we have the perfect opportunity for you!
The Global Visionaries Intensive Program is a condensed version of our highly successful year-long leadership development program. Through this experience, students will explore issues of social justice, participate in international service opportunities and develop leadership skills rarely given to today’s youth.
To top it off, participants get to network with an outstanding group of peers in the beautiful country of Guatemala.
Reagan Jackson, GV’s Program Manager, describes this opportunity as a chance for students “who really wanted to do the year long GV Program, but were too busy with other commitments. The Intensive Program is an opportunity for them to still go on the trip without having to commit to the additional time.”
Participants in the Intensive Program will attend a three day Pro-Justice Workshop to be held in Seattle from July 31 to August 2, 2011. Students will then go to Guatemala for 14 days from August 4-18 and attend a post-trip workshop on August 26.
During the pre-departure Pro-Justice Workshop, students will examine systematic oppression and discover ways to advocate for peace and justice both locally and globally. The workshop will cover topics such as teambuilding, cross-cultural and Pro-Justice training and leadership development.
Upon completion, students will embark on 14 eye-opening days in the beautiful country of Guatemala.
While there, each student will participate in the Home-Stay Program with an assigned partner of the same gender. Students will essentially become members of a Guatemalan family and develop “a home away from home.”
This experience will allow students to become immersed in Guatemala’s culture and customs first-hand.
The Intensive Trip is identical to GV’s Spring and Summer Trips, except students will have the opportunity to join three different work teams as opposed to just one. These work teams include Construction, Hospital and Reforestation.
Additionally, the Intensive Program allows for only 20 participants, which is half the size of a full program. This smaller group gives students the ability to connect better with peers and build stronger relationships.
Students will learn about Guatemala by experiencing different foods and participating in excursions to local markets, Mayan ruins and highlands.
The Intensive Program is open to high school students of all ages. The total cost for the trip is $3000 plus the cost of airfare. Small scholarships are available to students who have previously participated in GV’s programs.
This is a trip that combines good fun with hard work, cultural immersion, social justice and making new friends. Do not miss your chance to be part of it.
